Kitchen Renovation Cost Factors

How long it takes or how much it costs you to remodel your kitchen will vary depending on the kitchen design/style, your contactor, type of renovation, appliances, your home location, kitchen size, countertop designs, and other factors.

  • How does the size of the kitchen affect renovation costs?

The size of your kitchen will determine how much it costs to renovate. If you have a small space and want to do some minor renovations, then the cost for that project may be as low as $20,000. However, if your kitchen is large and has many features, such as an island or fireplace, then this could easily increase the overall cost to more than $50k.

  • Home location

Your home state or city will also affect total costs. Different states have different labour prices, meaning the labour and installation fee is slightly higher in some states. Additionally, states have different prices when it comes to building materials and shipping costs.

For instance, in LA, the cost of remodelling a kitchen is around $29,800 to $51,480. In Boston, the average cost range to renovate your kitchen is $15,580 to $40,300.

  •   Type of renovation

The type of renovation will also affect how much money you spend on remodelling your kitchen. For example, if you want new appliances but don't want them installed in their entirety (i.e., instead of everything, you replace one or two parts), then this would likely reduce costs significantly because there will be minimal work involved in installing those new appliances.

  • DIY vs. hiring a contractor

You can opt to do it yourself, which might save you some cash, or work with a contractor. While a contractor has more expenses than a DIY, it is safer, especially if you struggle with creativity. But today, many DIY videos are available for inspiration on YouTube and other platforms.

  • Whether or not you are installing new cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are some of the biggest cost investments, taking 25%, which means the number of cabinets and materials will significantly affect your cost.

  • Whether or not you are installing new countertops

Countertops are another great expense, and your decision whether to install new ones or stick with the old ones will significantly affect the final budget.

  • Appliances

The make and brand of the kitchen appliances you want for your new kitchen will also affect the total cost. From the fridge, pressure cooker, and microwave to the gas cooker/oven, all of this affects the final renovation cost.

Kitchen Countertops and Backsplashes

The most popular kitchen countertop materials are granite, quartz, and engineered stone. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, which affect their prices.

  • Granite:

It is extremely durable, but it can be hard to clean because of its porous nature. It also scuffs easily if you're not careful with your hands or knives when cutting food on it. Granite countertops cost between $40 and $60 per sq. It is important to note that this price is affected by granite type, installation complexity, dealer, and other factors.

  • Quartz:

This material is highly resistant to stains and scratches, especially if they're caused by grease from cooking oil. However, some people find that quartz tends to chip over time due to normal wear and tear from everyday use. The average cost of a quartz countertop is from $50 to $65 per square foot.

Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are one of the most important aspects of your kitchen/kitchen renovation. They hold a variety of content from food to dishes, so choosing the right material is key to making sure they are durable and stylish enough to complement any decor. They are also one of your biggest cost investments.

The kitchen cabinet ranges from $100 to $1,200 per linear foot, and the installations range from $1,860 to $9,430. This price is affected by the cabinet styles (custom-made cabinets are the most expensive), materials used, and providers.

Kitchen Flooring

Kitchen flooring costs about $1,500 to $4,700 (with installation) There are several different types of flooring available, including tile and hardwood. Each type has its benefits and drawbacks, so it's important to do some research before deciding what type of material works best for you. Consider durability as well as cost per square foot (CPF). When looking at CPF, you should also consider factors such as the quality of construction materials used, whether there will be any maintenance involved with keeping up with cleaning schedules, and whether or not there are additional costs associated with replacing old wood floors.

Kitchen Plumbing

Kitchen plumbing is one of the most important aspects of your kitchen renovation, and in most cases, you will have to buy new pipes as it is hard to recycle old ones since you are relocating the supply lines and maybe the sewage lines.

When it comes to plumbing, there are many things you need to consider, such as what kind of sink should be used, how big the space is between sinks, the size of the pipes, and the permit. Plumbing costs about $1,180. You might also need an extra $500 to $1,500 for your permit.

Labour and Installation

This is where most homeowners tend to get sticker shock because they don't know how much labour goes into every aspect of their project (or even if there will be any). Labour takes up about 18% of your budget and ranges from $3,500 to $6,000+ for both minor and major remodels. But this price is affected by the extent of your renovation and the contractor rates. If you are working on a tight budget, you may consider hiring local kitchen remodelling contractors who subcontract other contractors. Otherwise, DIYers can save money by doing some or all of themselves.

Painting/wall updates

The cost of painting a kitchen is around $300 to $750. But if you are looking to knock down some walls during the renovation, you might need a bit more. You need someone to rebuild new walls and paint. To remove a load-bearing wall, you need around $1,200 to $3,000, while a non-load-bearing wall can cost between $300 to $1,000.

Lighting

What type of lighting do you want? Are you shipping or buying locally? This will help you get close to the actual costs. But HomeAdvisor puts the average cost at $524. The ceiling lights are about $100, while light bars range from $300 to $400.
